A mental disorder is characterized by clinically significant impairment in a person's cognitive abilities, emotion regulation, or behavior. This usually involves suffering or impairments in important functional areas. There are many types of mental disorders. Mental disorders can also be referred to as mental health problems. The latter term is a broader term that includes mental disorders, psychosocial disabilities and (other) mental disorders associated with significant distress, impairment of function or risk of self-harm.This booklet focuses on the mental disorders described in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). In 2019, one in eight people, or 970 million people worldwide, suffered from a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression being the most common (1). In 2020, the number of people suffering from anxiety and depressive disorders has increased significantly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Preliminary estimates suggest a 26% and 28% increase in anxiety disorders and major depressive disorders, respectively, in just one year (2). Although effective prevention and treatment options exist, most people with mental disorders do not have access to effective treatment.Many people face stigma, discrimination and violations of their human rights.
