Local Government Reporter The Centre Daily Times in State College, Pennsylvania, is looking for a strong reporter with a passion for accountability and enterprise to cover Centre County and its municipal boards and councils. The emphasis will be on government accountability and growth coverage. The successful candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to keep track of numerous boards and councils and to build sources within the townships and boroughs that make up Centre County. This reporter must be able to stay on top of development happenings and keep a watchful eye on local governments. Investigative work will be key to this beat, and the successful candidate must also be prepared to pivot quickly to produce breaking news. It is critical that applicants have a strong understanding of SEO, social media and how to use digital elements (photos, videos, graphics) to complement their reporting. The successful candidate will use analytics to help understand the audience, with the goal of helping the CDT grow audience reach and earn loyal readers. Education and knowledge: College degree required; at least two years beat reporting experience in a daily newsroom preferred. Duties and responsibilities: Conceive compelling enterprise story ideas, with a clear focus on information that will be of keen interest and relevance to local readers. Develop a broad range of sources. Be a social media expert – both as a news-gathering tool and as a way to push the news out quickly and build our audience, as well as your own brand. Understand audience metrics – which of your stories are resonating with readers and which are not? Working with your editor, regularly mine this data for takeaways about how we can build our audience. Produce basic video and photos in the field.
